The Asian studies program at Calvin offers a major and a minor, each designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of Asian history, culture, language, and more. Depending on your academic goals, you might want to also explore a major or minor Chinese or Japanese, two programs that are closely related to the Asian studies program.
Chinese majors and minors
Pursue Chinese language study through the 4th-year level, gain excellent opportunities to study abroad and discover the philosophical, historical and cultural background of China.
Chinese Education Major
The 42-credit hour Chinese education major will fully prepare you with advanced Chinese langauge courses and thorough exploration of traditional and modern Chinese culture.
Chinese K-12 Education Major
The 42-credit hour K-12 education program will enable you with advanced Chinese language ability, deep knowledge of Chinese history and culture and langauge pedagogy.
Students may obtain a minor in the Chinese language or in Chinese culture study through this 7 course minor.
Chinese Study Group Minor
Advance through intermediate Chinese language study and gain knowledge of Chinese art, history, religion and more through this 7 course minor.
Chinese Education Minor
This 30-credit hour minor includes language study, language pedagogy, and Chinese cultural courses.
Japanese majors and minors
The 42-credit hour Japanese major combines language courses with courses in Japanese culture to ensure you get a full experience in the program. You can also enhance your program and fulfill major requirements by studying abroad through the Japan Center for Michigan Universities.
This 27-credit hour minor focuses solely on Japanese language study, though cultural perspectives are a part of these courses as well.
Japanese Study Minor
This 25-credit hour minor combines introductory language study with elective options in art history, history, political science and/or religion to expand your study of the Japan to its history, culture and religion.
Our Korean program offers courses in the Korean language up to intermediate level. We don’t currently offer a major or minor in Korean, but Korean languages courses do count toward an Asian studies degree.
