Each year, we recognize the many ways our faculty have contributed to education at Calvin University through outstanding teaching in a variety of categories.
Faculty responsibilities are multi-faceted. The following targeted-teaching awards have been established to allow the university to recognize the variety of contributions faculty make to Calvin University.
Presidential Award for Exemplary Teaching
2019 recipient: Deanna Van Dijk
The Presidential Award for Exemplary Teaching is testimony to the fact that the heart of a Christian liberal arts college is the teaching by its faculty. This award recognizes exemplary teachers and advances outstanding teaching at Calvin College.
FEN Award for Excellence in Teaching
2019 award recipient: Dave Warners
The annual From Every Nation Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes innovative and effective efforts by a Calvin College faculty member to promote a multicultural, anti-racist curriculum. It rewards the development and utilization of creative, original, effective teaching and materials that reflect any of the themes of FEN.
Innovative Teaching Award
2019 award recipient: Roman Williams
The Innovative Teaching Award recognizes and encourages faculty members who have contributed significant, creative teaching innovations and strategies that promote effective and deeper learning. Not awarded in 2018.
Advising and Mentoring Award
2019 award recipient: Joel Westra
The Advising and Mentoring Award recognizes and affirms the significant role of faculty advising and mentoring in forming the minds and shaping the lives of students.
Student-Faculty Research Award
2018 recipients: Elizabeth Oommen and Doug Vander Griend
The Student-Faculty Research Award recognizes a Calvin faculty member with an outstanding record of working with student collaborators in his or her professional research and scholarship.
Community-Based Teaching Award
2019 recipient: María Rodríguez
The Award for Community-Based Teaching recognizes faculty members who have pursued significant academic community engagement that promotes effective learning in partnership with the church, community organization, agency or business.
Collaborative Change Award
2019 award recipients: Retention Task Force—Todd Dornbos, Christina Edmondson, Lauren Jensen, Tom Steenwyk, John Walcott, and Paul Witte
The Collaborative Change Award recognizes positive effects that teams of colleagues have on shaping professional academic culture of Calvin.
Teaching Excellence Award for Affiliated and Adjunct Faculty
2019 award recipients: Ryan Rooks and Kim Benedict
The Teaching Excellence Award recognizes excellent teaching of students and faithful service to an academic department. It also acknowledges the significant role of affiliated and adjunct faculty in advancing the mission of Calvin College.
