History Colloquium: William Van Vugt, Portrait of an English Migration: North Yorkshire People in North America

History Colloquium

Speaker: William Van Vugt

Additional details TBA

Join us for a presentation by Calvin historian William Van Vugt on his latest book Portrait of an English Migration: North Yorkshire People in North America (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2021), a history of those who left North Yorkshire for North America between the eighteen century and early twentieth centuries. An exploration of the local history, geography, and cultures of Yorkshire and the places of settlement in North America, this book offers new sources and interpretations of English migration and the roles these people played in the social and economic history of Canada and the United States. Based on diary entries and letters, the book traces the movements of several families as they move to and throughout North America, and places their stories in the broader context of migration patterns.
