How engineering can lead to the NFL

Engineers are people who change society in tangible ways—a career in engineering creates real impact. Just ask engineer and entrepreneur Dan Evans, who is changing the game for some incredible athletes, including a handful of NFL players.

Dan Evans’ Calvin education gave him the courage to take a risk. And that risk paid off.

Now he's co-founder and chief technology officer of RecoverX, a company that has engineered incredible recovery technology. Athletes and physical therapists have taken notice, bringing fame to the name.

I do not think I would have had the courage to build RecoverX if it wasn't for Calvin. They seem to be working hard to equip their students for entrepreneurship,” Dan reflected. “I truly believe the most difficult part of starting a business is making that first big leap of faith to do it.”

Dan’s leap of faith brought him to a place he never expected: the NFL.

Dan wanted to use his engineering skills to change people’s lives. This passion led him to develop a company with his business partner Alex Aguiar. As part of RecoverX, Dan helped engineer a device and app that allows users to adjust the temperature on knee braces, making healing more effective and comfortable in the case of an injury. As a soccer player himself, Dan knew this device could prove helpful to other athletes.

Dan and Aguiar brought RecoverX to the top when they competed in the NFL’s 1st and Future pitch competition. Their company was one of three awarded $50,000. And it didn’t stop there. Super star athletes such as Kelvin Beachum, Curtis Martin, and Ndamukong Suh became advisors to and investors in RecoverX and it’s great technology.

The success of Dan’s invention continues to impact the lives of athletes. More than 200 individuals tested out the invention. Of them, 93 percent chose to switch permanently from other support to the RecoverX device.

Whether your journey will involve helping athletes or not, each engineer starts somewhere. You could be the next engineer to design a medical device, start a business, or pitch ideas at an NFL competition. Let Calvin’s engineering department be your start, and you’ll unlock doors to opportunities you might never have imagined.
