MILLE VIAE DVCVNT ROMAM – Go where all roads lead – Rome!

Study abroad programs in Italy are popular. And it’s no wonder! Italy is the perfect setting for learning about the history of the ancients and Western Europe, the history of the Christian faith, and the ongoing glories of art and architecture.

Calvin’s program, Summer Classics in Italy, takes an in-depth look at the art, architecture and antiquities of this gorgeous peninsula. Earn college credit as you explore the Greek basis for Roman art and architecture and examine some of the history of Italy through the medieval period and the Renaissance. See ancient and medieval towns, spend your time strolling through the Forum, sampling Italy’s wonderful food, and learning through a rigorous and engaging program!

The Summer Classics in Italy program begins with three days on-campus at Calvin College. During this time, students begin their lectures and coursework while enjoying group activities and life in the residence halls. Once in Italy, the cohort's travel is centered in Rome with two short trips to Florence and Pompeii. While students also travel through Italy by train, subway, and coach, walking the cobblestone streets of Italy is the primary mode of travel; the 2017 cohort walked 100 miles (161 km) in the 16 days that they were in Italy!

The cohort also takes a Gelato Tour. The 2017 cohort made an effort to visit a number of gelato shops to experience unique flavors and find the best gelato in all of Italy.

As a part of the coursework requirements for Classics 221: Classical Art and Architecture, students prepare an oral presentation on a site or work of art and present to the cohort in person, creating a dynamic connection between art, history, and the present.
