Are students required to complete a certain number of interims to graduate?
There are no requirements for the number of interims students must take, but there are certain programs and core requirements have interim built into their requirements (e.g. DCM, a core class usually taken during a student’s first interim). While this could change in the future, it is something students will need to plan for in managing their credit load, as a student may take a total of 17 credits between the interim and spring terms to stay within the full-time flat rate tuition charge.

Will additional financial aid be available to cover costs for credits over 17?
Financial aid is not provided by Calvin for credits over 17 but will be determined based on the new definition of full-time enrollment status (January interim plus spring semester). Additional federal loan eligibility may be available for costs related to credits over 17. Questions regarding financial aid can be directed to finaid@calvin.edu.

How will room and board charges be administered during interim?
For the 2020 – 2021 academic year, there will not be an additional charge for room and board for interim. Students who wish to stay on campus but are not taking an interim course (e.g., athletes) will need to submit an exception request through the housing office as is currently the policy.

Students attending during the fall or spring semesters, but not both, are charged for the semester they live on campus. If a student were to withdraw during or right after interim, they will not be charged anything more or less than a student who withdrew at the end of the fall semester.

If students don’t take an interim, they are basically off school from mid-December until the beginning of February. Why not finish the semester in April and add the optional interim as a May term?
There is discussion about the possibility of moving interim to May in 2021 – 2022, but there has been no decision yet.

Do the new interim changes apply to upcoming seniors?
Yes, the changes apply to every student.

Would this change make it more difficult to double major?
Perhaps. This will depend on the size of the majors being pursued. Given, the additional coursework required to achieve a second major, it will likely be more expensive for students to double-major moving forward. Another consideration is that Calvin has moved to a lower cost model for summer courses and may be an option for completing a double major in an affordable manner.

Will there be any adjustment to the credits needed to graduate?
124 credits will continue to be needed for graduation.

Will more classes be offered during interim to help meet core requirements?
We will be working toward offering more core courses in the interim.

How will the current May interim be handled in 2021?
May interim, as it is now, will not be considered as part of the spring semester for determining a student’s enrollment or financial aid status. There will be no tuition cost for May interim, however, if a student did not take a January interim and if the student has taken 14 or fewer credits in the spring. Under these conditions, a student will be charged only costs related to the off-campus interim travel, not tuition.
