The Filharmonic started with an audition tape and a dream. The group auditioned for NBC’s The Sing Off with the goal of making music on a global scale. The a capella group made it to the final round of The Sing Off and finished third overall. This, paired with their involvement in The Sing Off’s national tour, provided an audience for the dynamic vocal talents of the group. The group kept their momentum going by being featured in the movie Pitch Perfect 2 alongside the esteemed a capella group The Pentatonix. The group has since continued touring and have now released their debut album, MotownFillie.

The scope of The Filharmonic’s a capella music is wide, using both original songs and covers from a variety of genres. Their sound is self-described as an “urbanesque hip hop sound with 90’s nostalgia.” The ability to blend all of these influences, genres and sounds into their identity as a musical group comes from the member’s backgrounds in theater, opera, jazz and classical music.

A large part of the identity of The Filharmonics is rooted in their heritage. All six members of the group are Filipino-Americans, which is central to their approach to the project. As stated on their website, the group “honors their Filipino heritage through incredibly nuanced musical performances that are both moving and fun to experience.” This heritage adds another layer to the synergy they seek to find in the genres and styles they incorporate in their a capella performance.

Opening for The Filharmonic is Calvin College’s own men’s a capella group, uKinghted. uKnighted is a student led group that is in its second year of existence and has impressed audiences with fresh, energetic performances of familiar songs in barbershop and pop styles.
