At the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory in Salsbury Cove, Maine, students will participate in supervised and independent research projects under laboratory mentors as well as numerous experiential learning programs.

Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowships support undergraduate students working in the laboratories of resident or visiting scientists on hands-on research projects. Summer fellowships also provide students with other educational opportunities including an extensive scientific seminar program, professional development workshops, and dedicated residential-life programs.

Compensation

Research fellowships include room, board, travel (airfare or mileage) and a stipend of around $500 per week.

Undergraduate research fellowships are open to all US undergraduate students. Students must be US citizens or non-citizen permanent residents. Students must have completed at least one semester of undergraduate biology. Students interested in bioinformatics or computational biology must demonstrate some experience with programming, and the biology requirement may be waived. Graduating seniors are not eligible for NSF REU funds. Research fellowships are 8-10 weeks long and include room, board, travel (airfare or mileage) and stipend (~$500/wk.) NSF and the MDI Biological Laboratory are particularly interested in applicants from non-research intensive colleges and universities.
