Unlearn 365: Stereotypes, Biases, and Racism!

Patrick Lyoya's Case by Joseph Kuilema*

An overview of the Patrick Lyoya case, starting all the way back with the colonization of the Congo and ending with his killing here in Grand Rapids. Patrick Lyoya was killed in Grand Rapids on April 4. The police officer who shot him in the back of the head has been charged with second degree murder. How did this happen? In this session we will move beyond these two men to take a structural and historical look at how a young man from the Congo died a couple miles from our campus at the hands of the police. From colonialism to redlining, we will try to think deeply together about what justice for Patrick Lyoya might include.
