But Why Topology?

  • Thursday, October 31, 2019
  • 3:40 PM–4:30 PM
  • North Hall 276

Anna Jeffries and Lizzy Gorton, Calvin University (Students)

Maybe you’ve heard the joke that a doughnut and a coffee cup are the same to a topologist. Maybe you even know what Reidemeister moves are and the basic principles of knot theory. But have you ever tried to dig into the nitty-gritty details of topology? And how do we, as creatures living in a thoroughly 3-dimensional world, even picture the 4th dimension, let alone do complex math in such a dimension? And, more generally speaking, what can topology do in the real world (why do we study it)? Join us as we try to shed a little light on the complexities and possibilities of topology and discuss our experiences this past summer as undergraduate researchers.

Refreshments precede the talk at 3:30 p.m. in NH 282.
