Implicit Bias in Health Care Training

Implicit bias training for health care providers. Choose a two contact hour live training on Calvin's campus, or for those who need three contact hours, add on one online contact hour prior to the live session.

Are you a health care provider seeking continuing education? Calvin University offers both live and online learning opportunities. 

Implicit Bias Training

  • Two contact hour current offering:  A live, two contact hour session held on-campus on January 20, 2023 from noon-2:00 in the Commons Annex Lecture Hall. Cost - $80 for non-Calvin employees. Free for Calvin employees.
  • Three contact hour current offering: Before the live session, engage online with current research on implicit bias in health care and reflect on the application in your role for one contact hour. Then, attend the live, two-hour training January 20, 2023. We will send you the asynchronous course content and engagement activities by January 13, 2023 for completion by January 20, 2023 at noon. Cost - $110 for non-Calvin employees. Free for Calvin employees. Registration and payment (if applicable) is required.

These sessions meet the state of Michigan LARA Implicit Bias training requirements for approved content, pre and post-tests, and interaction with other participants and the instructor. 

Implicit Bias Training Learning Outcomes:

After attending the two-hour live training, participants will be able to:

-Describe how cultural norms, language, and experiences shape our individual knowledge and decision-making.

-Describe the neuroscience of implicit bias.

-Identify several forms of bias.

-Interpret the relationship between implicit bias and disparate access to and delivery of health care services.

-Explain a process to mitigate implicit bias in delivery of health care services.

After interactive online engagement and the two-hour live training (total of three hours), participants will be able to: 

-Reflect on current implicit bias research and strategies to reduce disparities in health care.

-Describe how cultural norms, language, and experiences shape our individual knowledge and decision-making.

-Describe the neuroscience of implicit bias.

-Identify several forms of bias.

-Interpret the relationship between implicit bias and disparate access to and delivery of health care services.

-Explain a process to mitigate implicit bias in delivery of health care services.
