Toluwani Adekunle will present findings from her study which serves to highlight the lived experiences of African American mothers/caregivers raising children in an urban community of high multi-dimensional poverty and police brutality, during COVID.

Toluwani and her colleagues’ findings suggest that AA mothers/caregivers are experiencing a complex layer of fatigue and burn out determined by multi-dimensional issues of systemic racism, pressures of motherhood, and a global pandemic. AA mothers/caregivers will benefit from spaces for fostering social support systems; sharing coping strategies, and building psycho-social resilience. Photovoice was effective in capturing and highlighting these complexities. Fostering agency among AA mothers/caregivers can impact their engagement in self-regulation practices.
