This presentation intends to provide a perspective to learn about Chinese history and culture through the evolution of the Chinese writing system.

The speaker will introduce the evolution of the Chinese writing system alongside with the development of Chinese history. From the oracle bone scripts to the Modern standard Chinese characters, the immutability and uniqueness of Chinese characters provide impetus for the continuation of Chinese culture, in addition, impact Chinese people’s philosophy, aesthetics, and ways of thinking.

Dr. Yue Zhuo grew up in China and has lived abroad in the United Kingdom and United States. As a fourth-generation teacher, she inherited the desire to pursue a career as an educator. She came to the US for her doctoral degree and holds a Ph.D in Literacy, Culture and Language from Oakland University.  Dr. Zhuo is enthusiastic in teaching languages.  She began her teaching career as an English as foreign language (EFL) instructor in China and is currently teaching Chinese at Calvin University.

She enjoys traveling, reading, watching films, and music, especially singing Chinese folk songs, but Chinese calligraphy is one of her favorites.  She loves Chinese calligraphy and wants to introduce people to the beauty of Chinese writing.
