Join area business leaders and Calvin alumni on Tuesday, February 14, at 7 a.m. for the Calvin Executive Breakfast Series

It is a time of unprecedented change for the business of college football, and not just because Calvin University will be fielding a team for the first time in history. Dramatic realignment of conferences; increasing amounts of NIL money for athletes; a transfer portal allowing players to become virtual free agents; and questions about college football and playoff system governance make it an exciting time for colleges, teams, administrators, athletes, and fans alike. Join us as we hear Calvin University Director of Athletics, Jim Timmer, and newly hired head football coach, Trent Figg, discuss the future of college football at Calvin University and beyond. Ask questions and register to win a historic piece of Calvin football memorabilia.

Dr. Jim Timmer, Calvin University Director of Athletics
Dr. Jim Timmer is a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a 1991 graduate of Calvin University where he majored in Political Science. Timmer went on to get his Masters in Physical Education and a Doctorate in Education from the University of New Mexico.

Jim was an all-Grand Rapids City League athlete in three sports at Grand Rapids Christian High before going on to play baseball and basketball at Calvin.

After receiving his doctorate, Jim served on the faculty of Baldwin-Wallace College as Associate Professor of Health and Physical Education. He was also the Assistant Coach of Men’s Basketball and Baseball and Head Men’s Golf Coach. In 2003, Timmer returned to Calvin as Professor of Kinesiology and the Head Coach of Men’s Golf and Baseball before becoming the Director of Men’s Athletics. He is now Head Director of Athletics for Calvin University.

Trent Figg, Calvin University Head Football Coach
A native of Chillicothe, Missouri, Trent Figg is a 2008 graduate of William Jewell College. He was a four-year member of the William Jewell football team as a defensive back where he earned the team Hustle Award and was a 2007 Academic All-American. Figg went on to earn a Masters degree in Education Leadership from Northwest Missouri State.

His first full-time football coaching position came at Division II Southern Arkansas University. He later became the defensive coordinator at William Jewell College from 2015-2016 where his defense led its conference in quarterback sacks and tackles for loss.

In 2017, Figg returned to Southern Arkansas as defensive coordinator. His Southern Arkansas defense was ranked as the No. 2 unit in the Great American Conference.

Figg's first Division I job came in 2018 when he took over as special teams coordinator and running backs coach at Missouri State. He later spent two years (2019-2021) at the University of Hawai'i where he began as chief of staff of the football program. After nine months he was named associate head coach of the defense and defensive backs. While at Hawai'i, Figg coached a Jim Thorpe national defensive player of the week and had a first time all conference safety who was tied for 2nd in the country in interceptions. Two of his defensive backs – Eugene Ford and Cortez Davis – later signed NFL free-agent contracts.

Figg comes to Calvin from the University of Oregon. In 2022, he served as the football program's senior offensive analyst under current head coach Dan Lanning. Oregon recently completed a 10-3 season that included a 28-27 win over the University of North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl. Figg and his wife Tori have three sons: Titus, Thomas and Tobias.
