Making Pretzels from Polygons

  • Thursday, February 25, 2021
  • 3:45 PM–4:45 PM

Calvin Professor James Turner will be the featured speaker at the Mathematics and Statistics Department Colloquium on February 25.

On Thursday, February 25 at 3:40, the Mathematics & Statistics Colloquium will host a lecture by Dr. James Turner.  His presentation is entitled "Making Pretzels from Polygons."

"I will give an introduction to algebraic topology by looking at a basic goal of the subject (classification of spaces) and examine a specific tool for carrying out that goal (fundamental group). In particular, we describe an approach to classifying surfaces by showing how any single surface (such as a pretzel) can be built from a polygonal region. We then give a proof of this classification and show how it is connected to the fundamental group in a particular way. This will be accomplished via a little straightforward geometry and group theory."

This will be a virtual meeting.  Contact Nathan Sunukjian at nss9@calvin.edu to receive a link.
