Spreading Opinions in Society

  • Thursday, December 5, 2019
  • 3:40 PM–4:30 PM
  • North Hall 276

Todd Kapitula, Calvin University

A simple mathematical model (an ordinary differential equation, see Math 231) will be built which can be used to provide a qualitative description of how an opinion can spread through a group of people.  This model will take into account things like agreeableness, contrariness, and inflexibility. The analysis of the model requires only algebra and calculus, see Math 331.  Time permitting, the model will be extended to graphs. In the limit of strong interactions between nodes the governing equation will be a nonlinear partial differential equation, see Math 333.  The collaborators on this continuing work include former Calvin students.

Refreshments precede the talk at 3:30 p.m. in NH 282.
