Plaster Creek Stewards working in Grand Rapids

Events highlighting the new president’s initiatives and vision will take place throughout the month of October. You're invited!

About

Where Plaster Creek formerly rushed through a deep channel with steep, eroding banks, a healthy floodplain is being created through a partnership between Plaster Creek Stewards, the residents of Leisure Creek Condos, and the Michigan EGLE Non-Point Source Program through the US EPA. The new gentle slopes of this reshaped floodplain allow Plaster Creek to rise over its banks and spread out so that recently planted native plants can absorb and filter its water. This healthy flooding into an absorbent floodplain reduces flooding and erosion downstream, and it creates a vibrant habitat for native pollinators and other animals in our community.

Project details

On Saturday, we will add more native plants (growing deep roots) to the landscape to hold the banks, reduce flooding, and bolster a vibrant, diverse ecosystem that both neighbors and native wildlife can all enjoy.

Like all our Spring and Fall events, this event is kid and family-friendly, so bring your family, friends, and other community members to learn and make memories together. We will have refreshments and some tools, but you may want to bring your own pair of garden gloves. If you have a shovel, that is helpful, too. We recommend close-toed shoes and pants. Your RSVP is helpful for ordering food and preparing tools, but not necessary if you decide to come at the last minute!

Calvin University's dining halls will be serving a special environmentally-conscious menu. If you do not have a meal plan but would like to join us for lunch on-campus after the restoration project, please sign up and we can provide a meal ticket for you at the event.

Please bring a mask for indoor education segment if desired, clothes and footwear for mud and weather, water bottle, a shovel if you have one.

Transportation

Everyone is responsible for their own transportation, but we're happy to help people coordinate. If you are interested in carpooling and are willing to drive others or need a ride, let us know by signing up for the appropriate slot. We will have a van for Calvin students who need transportation to LCC. At the end of the keynote, drivers and riders can separate into groups and find each other to travel to LCC and back at the end of the event. Groups going to the Greenhouse can carpool or join us for a 20-minute walk through Calvin's Ecosystem Preserve.
