An American in Venice: James McNeill Whistler and His Legacy

Organized by the Syracuse University Art Collection

In 1879 American artist James McNeill Whistler arrived in Italy with a commission from the Fine Arts Society of London to create twelve etchings of Venice. Over the ensuing fourteen months the artist produced a body of prints that are among the most important of his career. This exhibition presents twelve prints by Whistler, alongside the work of followers who were practicing in Italy after his time there. The juxtaposition of these works allow the viewer to appreciate both Whistler’s innovations and the different ways in which his work affected the artists who followed him.

Chasing Faroe – Imagining, Being, Remembering

John Donnelly
Cover: Untitled

Chasing Fareo is a selection of work based on artist John Donnelly's experience prior to, during, and following a four-week expedition to the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic. The paintings—on paper, wood, canvas and wool—range from six inches to four feet in size. They document the memory of travel, the being in an actual place, and the imagining of a new destination on the line that divides the heavens and earth.
