MOST HIGHLY FAVORED: THE LIFE OF THE VIRGIN MARY
This exhibition’s title is derived from the angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary in Luke 1:28 and the Basque hymn, Most Highly Favored Lady. Drawn from the collection of Sandra Bowden, the exhibition includes over 50 paintings, sculptures and objects of devotion by artists from over twenty countries. All of these come together to offer a visual feast that inspires and communicates not only how the life of Mary has influenced the church, but also how her life still lives on in cultures round the globe.
ECCE HOMO: BEHOLD THE MAN
Ecce homo is Latin for “behold the man.” This declaration refers to the presentation of Christ by the Roman ruler, Pontius Pilate, before the Jewish mob as described in John 19. In this exhibition, over 20 works of art from the collection of Sandra Bowden are arranged to place the viewer at the scene where Jesus was condemned by the crowd to die. Among the artists included are: Jacques Callot, George Rouault, Max Beckman, Otto Dix, Bruce Herman, Tyrus Clutter and Salvador Dali.
