Frank DeFord discusses "That Peculiar Modern American Institution: School Sports."

While recognizing that sports can be a vital and attractive part of every high school and college experience, Deford is concerned about the excesses of many sports programs. He maintains that too much real estate and emotion have been invested in athletics at American academic institutions. By ignoring the serious cultural effect of athletics, particularly in schools, he believes we jeopardize our academic future.
