James Vanden Bosch: The Absolute Phrase and the Second Amendment
6:00–7:00 p.m. Continued Networking

The Second Amendment, ratified in 1791, is introduced by an absolute phrase: "A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State." Over the last hundred years or so, there has been a good deal of discussion of the grammatical and semantic role played by that introductory absolute phrase in relation to the main clause that follows: "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed." A good part of that discussion focuses on the nature of the absolute phrase itself—its structure, as well as the variety of forms it can take, and its specific meaning in this amendment.

Calvin professor of English James Vanden Bosch, the college’s resident grammarian, has been doing careful research on the intent of an absolute phrase like the one we find in the Second Amendment. What did such a phrase signify during the time it was written?
