- Rigorous faith: Calvin’s widely-respected program integrates rigorous academics with a distinctive Christian purpose. We see biochemistry as a way to improve lives and serve your community.
- Meaningful experience: Conduct original, high-level research alongside your professors. Your research could lead to publication of your findings or presentation at a conference.
- Valuable skills: Calvin’s biochemistry program teaches more than just information. You’ll learn to communicate well, collaborate effectively, and think creatively about problems.
Introduction
Study the chemical reactions that make life happen. Explore chemical systems of incredible beauty and complexity. Confront real-world challenges like disease and environmental change. A biochemistry degree is the gateway to careers in research, medicine, and industry.
Exciting Courses
Early courses in our major expose you to all types of chemistry and give you a strong foundation in chemical thinking and problem-solving. Our advanced courses help you see how biochemistry can be used to solve real-world problems. You can take classes like:
- Metabolism and Metabolic Disease - Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions that occur in living organisms to produce energy and the molecules that are necessary to sustain life. This course will explore cellular metabolism with a focus on the relationships between key metabolic pathways and human diseases.
- Venom - Living cells and organisms must respond to their environment, which allows them to adapt to a variety of external conditions. We will use the language of chemistry to explore systems of interactions and regulations within and between cells. We will then examine the biochemistry of how animals, insects, plants, and microbes employ toxins to disrupt signaling pathways as a means of defense or attack.
- Proteins Gone Awry - Proteins play a multitude of roles in cell structure and function. To understand these roles, this class will go deeper into how the unique three-dimensional structures of proteins arise and influence their roles in catalysis, regulation, recognition, and information storage. Special attention will be paid to protein mutations and how alterations in structure confer on them new biological properties.

- A versatile program: Chemistry majors can take part in Calvin’s many art, music, sports, and study-abroad opportunities and still graduate in four years.
- A pathway to many careers: Our chemistry program is recognized nationally for its excellence. Graduates get into top-rated medical schools and graduate schools. Local companies are excited to hire our graduates. The alumni on our advisory board are excited to talk to our students about challenging and satisfying careers in industry.
Introduction
When you understand the tiniest components of our natural world, you can make big changes. Chemistry influences the medicine we invent, the laws we write, and the spaces we create—and Christians are needed in these spaces to solve problems and spur innovation.
Exciting Courses
Early courses in our major expose you to all types of chemistry and give you a strong foundation in chemical thinking and problem-solving. Our advanced courses help you see how different kinds of chemistry are connected and can be used to solve real-world problems. You can take classes like:
- The Quantum World - This course opens the door to the mysteries of quantum phenomena. An understanding of the fundamentals of quantum mechanics is valuable for every chemistry and biochemistry student. Students will cultivate an understanding of quantum chemistry, equipping them to unravel the intricacies of chemical bonding and molecular spectroscopy.
- Life Cycle of an Electric Car - Industrial chemistry shapes our lives and impacts the environment in many substantial ways. Along with the amazing advances that result from materials technology, many processes negatively impact the environment. This course will address selections from different areas of chemistry that impact our climate, our habitat, and our own lives.
- Forensics and Toxicology - Chemistry and chemical techniques play a pivotal role in the disciplines of forensic science and toxicology. In this course, students will learn how to apply presumptive and confirmatory tests for specific applications in forensic science. Students will then explore the chemistry of poisons at the trace element and molecular level, and the chemical and biochemical mechanisms of toxicity.

- Valuable skills: We’ll equip you with scientific knowledge as well as the mindset and skills to use it well. You’ll be prepared for any field.
- Serious about faith: We ask big questions about faith, ethics, and biology, but we don’t tell you what to believe. Instead, we give you the space and tools to explore.
- Broader experience: Even with our rigorous programs, we provide enough flexibility for you to pursue all your passions. Double major, study abroad, play sports, or do any number of things.
Introduction
At Calvin, we explore things—all things.
From the nucleotide subunits in DNA to the regional interactions between ecosystems, you’ll uncover the depth and beauty of God’s creation. Conduct real-world research on phages, or get exposed to various medical practices while studying abroad in places like Nepal. Add a second major in psychology, education, business, or international development. And, yes, you’ll still graduate in four years.
By exploring all things, you will broaden your perspective as you dive deep into the roots of issues and their ethical implications. You’ll ask what it means to be a Christian biologist and then become one.
