Transportation Options for Service-Learning

Need help getting to your service-learning site? The Service-Learning Center offers several options to make transportation easier and more accessible.

Option 1: Ride The Rapid (City Bus)

Calvin students, staff, and faculty can purchase a Rapid WAVE card from the Service-Learning Center for $5.

  • Cost per ride: $0.50 each way with the WAVE card (standard fare is $1.75)
  • Where to buy: Service-Learning Center (S-LC)
  • Need help? S-LC staff are happy to assist with bus routes, schedules, and navigation tips.

Visit www.ridetherapid.org for schedules and maps.

Option 2: Use Your Own Car or Carpool

Have access to a car? Great! You’re welcome to drive yourself or ride with a friend. If you're a passenger, consider chipping in for gas—it's a good way to support your fellow student.

Option 3: Request a Ride from the S-LC

Don’t have a way to get to your site? We’ve got you covered.

  • Hours available: Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Submit a request: [Ride Request Form]
  • After-hours rides: May be considered based on staff and vehicle availability.

Note: Rides are not available on weekends or during:
Thanksgiving Break, Christmas Break, Interim Break, Spring Break, Reading Recess, Final Exams, or Summer.

Ride Request Priorities

To best serve as many students as possible, we prioritize requests based on the following:

1. Service-Learning for Class

Highest priority is given to students whose service-learning is required as part of a course.

2. Student Organizations

Mid-level priority is given to service-learning activities organized by student groups.

3. General Service-Learning

We do our best to support students doing service-learning on their own initiative, when rides are available.

4. Social Security Office Rides

Through our partnership with the CISD, we assist international students in scheduling rides to the Social Security Office.

5. Other Requests

Occasionally, we may approve rides for purposes other than those listed, based on availability.

Additional Considerations

Access to a Car
We prioritize students without access to personal transportation.

Carpooling Encouraged
Going to the same site as a classmate? Try to ride together to help us serve more students.

Near a Bus Line?
We encourage students to use The Rapid whenever possible. The WAVE card is a great deal and supports independence.

Tight Schedule?
Let us know if you have back-to-back classes. We’ll do our best to get you where you need to be on time.

Weekly Ride Limit
To ensure fairness, students and organizations may request up to two rides per week.
