As an engineering student at Calvin, academic advising takes place within the engineering department. Here you’ll find all the forms and information you’ll need to plan your education at Calvin and graduate on time.

• International Designation Requirements

  Engineering students may receive an international designation along with the BSE degree by completing any two of the following three requirements:

  1. An international engineering interim course. There are many to choose from.
  2. An international internship and demonstrating some ability to speak the language of your internship country.
  3. The engineering summer program in Germany.

  Other procedures and activities may qualify for the international designation. For additional details, please contact the Prof. Mark Michmerhuizen.

• Sustainability Designation Requirements

  Students entering in Fall of 2023 or later should complete the university-wide sustainability designation. Requirements can be found here.

  • Complete ENGR 184: (a one credit hour course typically taken during sophomore year),
  • Complete a three or four SH sustainability-themed course,
  • Complete ENGR 384: (a one credit hour course typically taken during junior or senior year), and
  • Participate in a sustainability-related practical experience (e.g., internship, research, or senior design project).

  The courses currently approved as sustainability-themed courses are:

  • ENGR Wxx ("Sustainable Energy Systems")
  • ENGR Wxx ("Advanced Topics in Chemical Engineering")
  • ENGR 306 ("Principles of Environmental Engineering")
  • ECON 232 ("Sustainability Economics")
  • ECON 233 ("Economics of Energy and Sustainability")
  • BIOL 364 ("Global Health, Environment, and Sustainability")
  • ENST 210 ("Human Impacts on the Environment")

  You should also consult the Program for Sustainability (PSE), and see what our department does to promote sustainability.

  Any questions about the current list of approved sustainability-related courses or what practical experiences qualify for credit should be directed to the engineering department sustainability designation coordinator.

• Honors Requirements

  Calvin University's honors program consists of two distinct tracks: the Honors Scholars and Collegiate Scholars programs. For more information and to learn how to join one of these programs, see the Honors website.

  The honors requirements below apply only to the legacy honors program—they do not apply to students who are participating in the Honors Scholars or Collegiate Scholars programs. These requirements are provided for reference; if you have any questions about which program requirements apply to you, please contact your advisor or a member of the engineering department.

  Legacy Honors Program Requirements

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • Complete a total of six honors courses (18 hour minimum) overall, including:
    • At least two honors courses outside of the major
    • At least two honors courses in engineering with a minimum grade of A- (at least one of the courses needs to be a 300-level course)
      • The following courses cannot be used to fulfill this requirement: ENGR 101, 181, 185, 285, 294, 337, 339, 340, 382, 385, 387, 390, and 394.
  • Receive credit for ENGR 385: Engineering Internship or ENGR 387: International Engineering Internship
  • Complete ENGR 339: Senior Design Project (fall) and ENGR 340: Senior Design Project (spring)
