  • An interconnected discipline: Neuroscience at Calvin is interdisciplinary on purpose. Focus on chemistry, but also increase your expertise in biology and psychology.
  • A deeper purpose: As Christians who think deeply, we carefully consider how to integrate neuroscience with what we know is true as Christians. Everything you will uncover reveals something important about what it means to be a living image of God.
  • A gateway to your career: Calvin neuroscience majors go on prestigious graduate schools and find success in fields like biotechnology, laboratory research, and pharmaceuticals. Professors who know both you and their field well will make sure you get the research experience, career guidance, and letters of recommendation you need for med or grad school.
Introduction

Pursue a discipline that connects to an incredible number of careers and applications. Learn the mechanics of the human nervous system. Explore the chemistry behind how people think, feel, and act.

You’ll use chemistry, biology, and psychology to answer pressing questions about human behavior. Along the way, you’ll gain a greater understanding of God’s creation by studying what makes us human. Your knowledge of human behavior will give you a powerful voice in fields as diverse as economics, law, healthcare, and education.

  • Christian foundation: Neuroscience is not only the study of mind and brain; it's about the whole person. Calvin’s approach to faith and the sciences will empower you to ask hard questions and discover new answers.
  • High-tech facilities: Our equipment is on par with that of much bigger institutions--and you have access to it. Use our state-of-the-art EEG machine and other resources for your research.
  • Personal focus: Our professors are committed Christians with expertise and connections in their field. And they’re highly available to students, whether you’re interested in research, graduate school, or beyond.
  • Incredible opportunities: Grand Rapids’ famous “Medical Mile” offers lots of opportunities for hands-on experience, including Pine Rest, the fifth largest mental health facility in the country. Calvin interns are in demand, and your professors will help curate an internship experience that fits your career goals.
Introduction

What does your class list look like like if you complete the Neuroscience Concentration in Psychology? You might study what makes people tick in your "Theories of Personality" class. Grapple with high-tech ethics in an "Artificial Intelligence" class. Do gene research in the lab for your "Genetics and Development" class.

Calvin is one of the few Christian colleges or universities to offer a neuroscience program. You can investigate the brain from several angles by choosing one of the Neuroscience concentrations offered through Psychology, Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry. Within the Psychology-Neuroscience program you’ll focus on the psychology of cognition, behavior, and brain function by selecting from courses in psychology, philosophy, biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science.

Far from being narrow, studying neuroscience here is a broadening and enriching experience. You’ll ask questions not only about the mind and brain but about what makes us human from a Christian perspective.

  • Achieving Goals The LCS program is a four-year program in which students pursue one of two certificates—Life and Career Studies or Comprehensive Postsecondary Education. Students can choose from seven different concentrations aligned with their personal interests.
  • Connected to Community LCS students don’t learn in isolation—they take classes, engage in community events, volunteer, live in the residence halls, work in community internships, and take part in campus life alongside their peers.
  • Well-being and Independence Students will develop healthy habits that balance individual responsibility and social experiences.
  • Transitioning Well A dedicated team of support staff works with each student to help them gain the skills and knowledge to make the transition into adult life. Calvin faculty value each student’s unique gifts and situation, and work with students individually to help them achieve their goals.
Introduction

Life and Career Studies (LCS) is a Comprehensive Transition and Postsecondary program that equips students with intellectual disability to flourish in life.

Through active participation in campus life, person-centered planning, and individualized learning, the Life and Career Studies program empowers you to transition successfully into a fulfilling post-school life. At Calvin, you’ll find a learning environment that cultivates your gifts and fosters skills you’ll need to thrive.

You will learn alongside your peers in the college classroom and take specialized courses that address practical skills like financial literacy, employment readiness, relationships, and independent living. You have the opportunity to earn one of two non-degree certificates—and as you do, you’ll grow in confidence and independence.
