Excellence is not confined to one sport or to one season … not at Calvin University.

Heading into the second week of February, six of Calvin’s winter sports teams are ranked inside the top 20 nationally. The men’s and women’s basketball teams, men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, and both men’s hockey teams are among the nation’s best.

This continues Calvin’s excellent 2022-2023 campaign, which began with a fall sports season that saw five of Calvin’s teams holding national rankings at the same time.

Excellence on the court

Winners of ten straight, the women’s basketball team moved up to 17th in this week’s D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll. On Wednesday, Calvin travels to seventh-ranked Hope for a 7:30 p.m. matchup. On Saturday, Calvin will host 18th-ranked Trine at 1 p.m. inside Van Noord Arena.

The men’s basketball team ranks 13th in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. Like the women’s team, the Knights have won ten straight and are 18-3 overall. Calvin is preparing to travel to Alma on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game and will then host 21st-ranked Trine on Saturday in a 3 p.m. matchup.

Excellence in the pool

The men's swimming and diving team ranks 12th in the latest College Swim Coaches Association Top 25 poll. Like on the women’s side, the men have posted several nationally ranked times and set four school records.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are preparing to host the MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships on February 15-18 at the Venema Aquatic Center.

Excellence on the ice

The men’s Division I hockey team ranks 15th in the latest ACHA D1 Top 25 poll. They’ve held a spot in the poll throughout the entire regular season. The team is coming off a weekend sweep of Western Michigan University, where Head Coach Mike Petrusma picked up his 500th career victory. The Knights are back in action on Friday night on the road at Roosevelt University.

The men’s Division 3 hockey team ranks 16th in the latest ACHA D3 Top 25 poll. The Knights are coming off a weekend sweep of Michigan State. Calvin is back in action this Friday and Saturday with a weekend series against Saginaw Valley State.

Tradition of Excellence

TOP 6
The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics award the Learfield Director’s Cup each year to the top athletics program in the country. Calvin is one of only six schools in Division III athletics to be included as a Top 30 program in the Learfield standings every year dating back to 1996.

TOP 20
Calvin University’s athletic program produces more Academic All-Americans than almost all Division III institutions and ranks 19th all-time when considering all divisions. MIT, Notre Dame, Stanford, and the University of Michigan are among the company Calvin keeps near the top of that list.

TOP OF THE LEAGUE
Calvin has won 11 national championships in four different sports. This is the most in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Knights have also finished in the top four at the NCAA level 54 times in eight different sports, 27 of those as national runners-up. Calvin’s success on the national stage puts the program in elite company.
