The Project Neighborhood Koinonia House is a unique opportunity to live in intentional Christian community in the heart of Grand Rapids.
Rooted in the Greek word koinonia, meaning “fellowship,” this house is more than a place to live. It’s a place to grow spiritually, serve others, and build lifelong relationships. Participants are committed to structured time together as house residents and service to the neighborhood and community.
About the House
- Location: Eastown neighborhood, 3.6 miles west of Calvin’s campus
- Capacity: Up to 9 students + a mentor family
- Transportation: 20-minute bike ride or direct bus route to campus
- Amenities:
- Spacious common areas including a wood-paneled attic and finished basement
- Piano, video projector, and two desktop computers
- Large porch perfect for community gatherings
- Guest-friendly layout for hosting friends and family
Living Expectations
Koinonia House residents commit to a rhythm of shared life that includes:
- Weekly house meals and meetings
- Bible study and prayer
- Household responsibilities: e.g. cleaning, cooking, lawn care
- Community service: 20 hours per semester in the neighborhood
- Participation in retreats: One house retreat per semester
- Intentional reflection on faith, justice, and community living
Eligibility & Application
- Open to sophomore, junior, and senior students
- Requires a commitment to Christian community and service
- Students apply individually. We welcome friend groups considering living in a Project Neighborhood house, but cannot guarantee acceptance or house placements.

The Preserve House at 3770 Lake Dr is a residential opportunity for up to six upper-division (junior and senior) students who want to join the mission of Calvin’s Ecosystem Preserve and Native Gardens. Residents should have a passion for fostering connections between God, humans, and the more-than-human environment. Residents will meet weekly, host student gatherings, and lead and participate in environmental stewardship work (at least 20 hours per semester).
Requirement: Need to have worked at the preserve in some capacity, volunteer or paid. Not sure you meet the qualifications? Reach out to us!

The Garden House is a residential opportunity for a group of 4 or 5 students who are committed to sustainable living and enjoy thinking creatively about how to live out creation care values in everyday life. Residents are expected to develop sustainable living practices, support the Campus Garden, commit to monthly meetings with a Calvin faculty member, and must be willing to host community meals. Residents are expected to complete at least 20 hours of volunteer service at the Garden House each semester. They are also expected to participate in biweekly House Meetings, weekly communal meals, and regular house chores.
