Claire Cassiday

Pre-PA, 2025 Graduate

Why did you choose Calvin?

"Throughout my time at Calvin, I had numerous professors that got to know me personally, helped me apply to grad school, and were willing to meet with me to answer questions and give advice whenever I needed it. I also formed many close relationships with classmates. The small class sizes at Calvin made it very easy to form connections with people who I might not have met outside of the classroom. I chose Calvin because of the tight-knit community, and this is exactly what made my experience so great."

What are the strengths of Calvin's Pre-Health Program?

One of the advantages of Calvin being a smaller school is the number of available resources for students who are trying to navigate applying to pre-health programs. I heavily relied on Dr. LaRue when scheduling classes, picking schools to apply to, and trying to figure out the whole PA school application process. Additionally, because of the small class sizes, I had multiple professors who I felt comfortable asking to write me letters of recommendation. I felt like these professors didn't only know me academically, but personally too, which helped me stand out to PA programs.

What are some of the extracurriculars that shaped your journey in expected or unexpected ways?

I was a peer tutor at Calvin for a year, and I feel like this really helped me grow in my communication skills. I learned that not everyone receives information the same way and it's very important to try and understand someone's learning style when trying to convey information. I feel like this will be very helpful as I transition to be a PA as I will have to convey medical information to a variety of different patients.
