Biography
Academic Interests
Professor Engers teaches courses on J.R.R. Tolkien, Russian literature, and the English Reformation. His scholarly articles focus on the religious poetry of John Donne and Georger Herbert, analyzing the ways in which poetic expressions of faith are shaped by contexts such as classical rhetoric, early modern alchemy, and the ancient and modern philosophies of time. He has also presented and published on teaching literature at the college level, and co-edited a collection of scholarly essays on dialogism and poetry. He organized and led the university’s Semester in Britain in 2028 and 2022.

Education
Professor Engbers graduated from Calvin College in 1993 with a degree in English. He went on to earn a master of arts in English Reformation and Renaissance literature from The Catholic University of America in 1995. He returned to Calvin to teach in the English department in 2001, and two years later received his Ph.D in English literature from The Catholic University of America.
