This course explores the thriving cities and beautiful landscapes of southwestern British Columbia. Course themes include urban planning, environmental sustainability, immigration, cultural diversity, watershed protection, forest management, and reconciliation with indigenous groups. We will explore vibrant downtowns, exceptional urban parks, agricultural and watershed preserves, transit-oriented urban developments, diverse immigrant neighborhoods, the 2010 Winter Olympic facilities, and an indigenous-led urban redevelopment project. Hikes will explore watershed protection and sustainable development of fragile mountain environments. On Vancouver Island, we will visit the rugged, west coast and a remnant of old growth forest. Accommodations will consist of a hostel in Vancouver and a university dormitory in Victoria. Outdoor activities will include bicycling, hiking, and kayaking.
