Free Markets and Public Interest Article Recognized for 2024 Calvin Award for Scholarship on Christianity in Business
The Calvin University School of Business recently named the winners of its 2024 Award for Scholarship on Christianity in Business. The award recognizes an academic paper that makes an exceptional contribution to Christian theological inquiry in business, or to the social scientific study of Christian religious phenomena in business.
Mathilde Oosterhuis-Blok and Johan Graafland, Tilburg University, Netherlands, received the award for their article, “Free Markets and Public Interests in the Pharmaceutical Industry: A Comparative Analysis of Catholic and Reformational Critiques of Neoliberal Thought.”
Published in Business Ethics Quarterly, the paper provides a comparison of neoliberal, Catholic Social Teaching, and Calvinist perspectives on corporate social responsibility, both in general and applied to a market failure problem in the pharmaceutical industry. Lead author Mathilde Oosterhuis-Blok presented her paper, answered questions, and received the award in late October at the Calvin University School of Business.
"The School of Business continues to seek and recognize excellent scholars who are studying Christianity in business,” said Jill Risner, Associate Professor, Calvin University School of Business. “Through these efforts we are building meaningful networks with scholars around the world. Mathilde and Johan's work is especially important as a piece that integrates multiple faith perspectives related to corporate social responsibility to give us a more complete view of what a corporation's role in society should be."
The award is supported financially by the Calvin Center for Innovation in Business.
