STEP Set for June 9-11
Young men and women in grades seven through 10 will enjoy a simulated college experience June 9-11, 2006 at Calvin College.
Striving Toward Educational Possibilities, or STEP, is designed to introduce students to college life, give first-hand experience with college instructors and instruction, acquaint students with career opportunities help students determine the necessary steps for college entry and help students grow spiritually.
Says Delores Logwood, program coordinator for pre-college programs: "Nearly 100 youth will be provided with an experience that will positively impact their remaining years in high school and also direct them to post secondary educational and career options."
The three-day conference includes workshops, lectures, college preparatory courses, recreational activities, worship services and more.
It is part of the Calvin Pathways to Possibilities program, a college-church urban youth initiative, supported by grants, corporate giving and administered through the office of pre-college programs.
"Through this program," says Logwood, "Calvin College partners with local churches to encourage children and youth to value learning, seek academic success and higher education, and strive to live responsible lives. With this in mind, STEP is designed by the Pathways to Possibilities program to encourage urban youth to think of the wide range of educational possibilities available to them upon graduation from high school and to see college as one of the possibilities."
The cost for the STEP conference is just $60. More information is available by calling 616-526-6749.
