From Praying to Publishing: Student Authors Three Books
In the early morning hours, Jackie Amissah-Nunoo discovered her lifelong calling: serving Christ through writing.
“It was during a season when I realized I can’t do this lukewarmness thing, so I prayed to God, ‘use me, use me as you please, I have plans of how I think my life should go but just have your way in me.’”
Growing passion, growing platform
That early morning prayer time led Jackie, a public health major at Calvin University, in a new direction, revealing gifts she never knew she had. She started FlamingFireGirl, an Instagram page where she would write posts challenging girls to be on fire for God.
As her passion to help others grew, so did her platform. Jackie’s quiet time and reflections have thus far yielded three published works: “I’m Into You, Jesus,” “Loving God Deeply,” and “Flaming Fire Girl,” a 365-day devotional for girls.
Loving deeply, living wholeheartedly
Her motivation: “I just desire that people really, really love God. God is to be loved deeply, the first and great commandment is to love God with all our heart, all our mind, and all our soul.”
Her books are on the shelves of Calvin's campus store, local bookstores, and being sold on places like Barnes & Noble.com and Amazon.com, yet, Jackie sees her exercising this gift not replacing her current area of study, but rather complementing it.
“After graduation, I plan on getting my master’s in public health or working for a year, however, working for Jesus and writing books is a lifelong call, and I will be doing that wholeheartedly until God calls me home.”
A shaping community
She’s off to a good start. And in discovering this calling, she’s found good support at Calvin. “I’ve made good and lifelong friendships here,” said Jackie. “Friends who inspire me to love Jesus, to live wholeheartedly for him and not be ashamed of giving myself wholly to God now in my youth.”
As Jackie looks back at how God has used her these past couple of years. She simply says:
“It’s amazing to see what comes out of your surrender.”
