Topic for 2025
Wealth, Materialism, and the Christian Life
Can a person be financially well-off and still be a faithful Christian? Or is material wealth intrinsically a hindrance to following Jesus Christ? Why or why not? Discuss these questions by bringing together your own perspective and John Calvin's commentary on Jesus's discussion with his disciples about wealth and the kingdom of Heaven (available here) and Calvin's sermon on 1 Timothy 6: 17-19 (available here). Your 8 to 12-page essay should show close reading of these texts, including quotations and page references.
