Engineering Seminar: From Idea to Fabrication: Art and Architectural Perspectives from Jerome Tryon
- Wed, Nov 04, 2026
- 4:00 pm–5:30 pm
Science Building Lecture Hall 010
Interested in architecture? Want to see how the interdisciplinary approach to art making works? Come to the Engineering Seminar led by Jerome Tryon!
As the 2026 Visiting Artist at the Center Art Gallery at Calvin, Jerome Tryon designed and fabricated two large dynamic steel apparatuses that display his drawings and become a spatial device in their own right.
Come hear Tryon break down the design process for the exhibition's apparatus, from the initial design idea sketches through the digital fabrication documents. Learn about the architectural design process as the force that gives shape to the built object while highlighting its material and fabrication complexities. Drawing from his experience working in architectural firms, Tryon will also share how a project like the apparatus would have interfaced with structural engineers from a typical architectural design perspective.
As an architectural critic at the Yale School of Architecture, designer, and artist, Tryon's practice of spatial inquiry examines how memory shapes perception and architectural space. Through projects spanning drawings, architectural objects, and sculpted frames, he invites viewers to explore his steel-built environment to learn more about the relationship between image, space, and memory. Examine the intersecting world of art and engineering solutions with Tryon at the November 4 Engineering Seminar.
Explore the exhibition, and engage with the creative process of an artist and architect whose work bridges disciplines. This seminar is open to all, not just engineering majors.
Can't make it to the engineering seminar? Jerome Tryon's exhibition runs August 27 - November 6, 2026.
