Character & community seminar

Join us on Wednesday, April 1 at 3:30pm in Hiemenga Hall 334 for campus conversations on forming virtue through community-engaged learning.

Stacia Hoeksema, Hennie Schoon and Nate Glasper will be giving short presentations with discussion to follow each.

Stacia and Hennie will present: Integrating Faith Practice and Social Work
Social Work is an embodied profession that seeks to serve individuals, families, groups, communities, organizations, and institutions. The social work program at Calvin has recently developed a Master of Social Work Program and has used this opportunity to review the integration spiritual discipline and pedagogy. Calvin's Social Work Faculty will present both the process and resources they used for thinking through how to integrate virtues and Christian faith practices into the social work curriculum.

Nate will present: Belonging, Voice, and Virtue: Formation through Gospel Choir
Gospel Choir students don’t just sing, they learn to listen, lead, and belong. Through shared musical practice and engagement with community partners, students experience formation that is relational, embodied, and deeply communal. This presentation reflects on how gospel music-making becomes a site of character formation, cultivating virtues such as empathy, discipline, humility, and courage.
