Join us Wednesday, September 23, 3:30-5:00 pm, at the Calvin University School of Business for the annual Award for Scholarship on Christianity in Business. This award recognizes an academic paper which makes an exceptional contribution to Christian theological inquiry in business or the social scientific study of Christian religious phenomena in business. 

Dr. Stephen Hawkins will give a presentation and accept the award for his winning academic paper: Hawkins, S. (2024). Ministry or mutiny? The organizational antecedents of pastor-parishioner conflict. Journal of Management, Spirituality & Religion, 22(1), [743-767].

Dr. Hawkins's research focuses on organizational structure, leadership dynamics, and institutional values within mission-driven organizations. His paper examines the consequences churches face when they do not clearly define who makes decisions and who holds authority. These unclear boundaries often create tension, power struggles, and leadership problems. 

Dr. Hawkins has served as an ordained American Baptist pastor in Indiana and Wisconsin for the past 15 years.  He also serves as the Director of Spiritual Life and Service at Carroll University and as an instructor of nonprofit management and research methods at Bexley Seabury Seminary. Stephen has a PhD in sociology from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, an MBA from Marquette University, an MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a BA from Anderson University. He enjoys coaching his sons baseball team, cross-country skiing with his wife, and hiking with his two dogs.

The presentation will begin at 4:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be available 3:30 -4:00 p.m. The event is FREE, but please register for planning purposes.
