2026 Jellema Lecture

Dr. Michael Lamb on "Augustine and the Politics of Hope"

Reception following

Can we have any hope for politics? Given our current political realities, the answer might seem to be no. In this lecture, Michael Lamb, a scholar of hope, suggests otherwise. Recovering insights from St. Augustine, one of the most influential philosophers and theologians in the Christian tradition, Lamb offers an account of hope as a virtue that citizens need to resist the politics of presumption and despair. Along the way, he shows how St. Augustine is not the political pessimist that most people assume. Rather, he is a subtle and sophisticated teacher of hope.
