Biography
Professor VanAntwerp teaches introduction to engineering, introduction to thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and heat transfer, control systems engineering, and senior design. He prefers active learning exercises over lectures and is a proponent of hands-on labs as a way of experiencing new material. Knowledgeable about education research and practice, Professor VanAntwerp has authored several publications on innovative engineering education. He promotes innovation and the entrepreneurial mindset within the engineering education. In addition to his regular student advising, Professor VanAntwerp serves as an unofficial advisor for the department to students who are considering graduate school.
Professor VanAntwerp has published fourteen journal articles, two of them invited papers, fifteen conference publications, a book, a book chapter, and holds a U.S. patent on a high-speed technique forncontrolling sheet and film processes. He serves as a reviewer for thirteen leading journals in the area of systems and control, and is on the editorial board of the IEEE Control Systems Magazine. He was named an outstanding reviewer by Automatica in 2004. His research areas include systems modeling, robust and optimal control systems, optimization theory, and computation and computability. Professor VanAntwerp is interested in the relationship between Christian faith and engineering. He has authored several papers on the topic and has served as Program Chair for the Christian Engineering Conference twice. In addition, he has led several on-campus Bible study and discussion groups for students.
