April 2024

Hekman Library
On the 300 level, door preparation and millwork on the banquettes, seating, and cabinets are in progress. Work on the ceiling and drywall installation is also in progress.
On the 200 and 100 levels, work has begun on bathrooms and painting preparations.
At Hiemenga Hall, interior framing and mechanical projects are in flight. From there, construction teams will begin hanging drywall.
Outdoor Athletics
On the track project, drainage work will be done to address water issues to the west of the new practice soccer field.
  • The entire new open area north of the road off the East Paris entrance is off limits to runners, walkers, and other forms of foot traffic. Those areas have been seeded and further top dressing and seeding will be done. We hope to open this new space for the fall cross country and soccer seasons, but the grass will require an undisturbed summer of growth to allow that to happen. Signs will be posted to mark the affected areas where foot traffic should be avoided.
Work on the football building has moved indoors as HVAC and plumbing is being installed. On the exterior, the roof has been completed and metal work and brick work are being finalized.
The next two months of work on the soccer stadium will be very busy. Some steel has already arrived and cranes are coming in to move and install steel starting early the week of April 15. Once steel goes up, teams will begin adding additional masonry around the steel.
Cadaver Lab
The lab’s construction has progressed smoothly, and we are currently anticipating an early completion date. The delivery date was originally planned for early July; now, the team is targeting June 1.
  • Calvin Information Technology (CIT) is planning to deliver the Virtual Lab by July 1.
A dedication for these new facilities will be planned for September.

During construction this fall, men’s and women’s soccer will play on Calvin’s new Zuidema Soccer Field (map and directions). The new soccer stadium and football building are planned to be built and open for use by the fall of 2024.

Lacrosse will play on the new soccer field until construction of a new football stadium; their locker rooms will remain located in the main field house until that time.

Football will be housed in their permanent locker room in the new football building when it is completed. The football team will practice on the lower field, formerly home (for practice) to the men’s soccer team.

Library staff and services will be open and operating on the fourth and fifth floors of Hekman Library during the 2023–2024 academic year.

During the 2023–24 academic year, the entrance into the library will be from the Hiemenga Hall entrance, near the southeast corner of the building (facing Calvin Seminary and near the fireplace lobby). From there, elevator and stairwell access to the fourth and fifth floors will be available and clearly marked.

The CFAC parking lot will effectively be sliced in two by the construction zone; there will not be any traffic flow all the way around the CFAC. There will be parking on both the north (primary) and the south side facing the seminary building (more limited), but cars will not be able to drive from one end to the other. Walkways, however, will allow foot traffic to pass through adjacent to the construction zone.

Parking for the Speech and Hearing Clinic will generally be located on the west side of the engineering building. Parking is plentiful there, and new crosswalks have been installed on the ring road between the clinic site and its new parking lot.

Peet’s moved from the second floor of the library to the first floor of the Spoelhof University Center in the former Spoelhof Café. Peet’s officially opened in its new location on Monday, August 14.
