How Credit for Prior Learning works
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) allows students to earn academic credit for learning gained outside of a traditional college classroom.
CPL may be used to satisfy or waive certain degree requirements or electives, based on an evaluation process. This helps reduce the time and cost it may take to complete a degree, while maintaining Calvin’s academic standards.
Credit limits
Depending on what type of student you are, you may be eligible for the following maximum CPL credits:
- Adult bachelor's degree completion students: up to 32 credit hours
- Graduate and post-baccalaureate: up to 9 credit hours
Evaluation Criteria
Each learning experience is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Some learning experiences (listed below) have been pre-approved.
When reviewing a CPL request, we consider if the learning experience:
- Reflects college-level learning at a level that is appropriate to undergraduate or graduate education
- Includes clear evidence of time-on-task that would justify a specific number of credits
- Includes specific documentation (e.g., exam scores, certificate of completion) that validates student completion of the experience
- Meets learning objectives that are appropriate to program requirements (for specific programs, rather than general elective credit)
What kinds of learning may qualify?
CPL may be awarded for learning gained through experiences such as:
- Workforce training
- Professional development or conferences
- Military training or service
- Non‑credit coursework or certifications
- Community service or leadership experiences
- Self‑directed or independent learning
