Changes at Grand Rapids Broadway:

  1. There is now a $2 handling fee for all orders. This is to offset our mailing and processing expenses.
  2. DeVos Hall will now have security checks before entering the hall. People need to be prepared to arrive earlier than they have in the past, to have extra time to get to their seats before the show begins.

Grand Rapids Opera

La Traviata

Music by Giuseppe Verdi
June 14 & 15 | 7:30 PM | St. Cecilia Music Center

The heartbreaking true story of Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis became the classic novella that inspired the films Camille, Pretty Woman and Moulin Rouge. The great Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi retells her story in one of the greatest operas of all time. Opera Grand Rapids’ production in the elegant setting of St. Cecilia Music Center stars Metropolitan Opera star soprano Elizabeth Caballero. Elizabeth is joined by one of the most exciting new vocal talents to emerge on the international stage, Tenor Zach Borichevsky as Alfredo, and Opera Grand Rapids favorite Mark Rucker as his father, Germont.

The Opera Box Office will be happy to help you find the best seats available, call them at 616.451.2741 ext. 3. Be sure to reference your CALL membership id number to receive the discount.

Performance Bicycle Partnership

See this link for the discount form to print. Be sure to have your CALL membership card and id# for the 30% discount on bikes.

As previously announced, though with little fanfare, CALL now cooperates with Philadelphia’s Advanced Sports International to promote bicycling as a leisure and health activity. The chief benefit of this relationship is a standard 30% discount from MSRP on bicycles by three distinguished, innovative, and value-conscious brands—Fuji, Kestrel, and Breezer. Together they make virtually every kind of bicycle from varieties of “leisure” bikes to mountain bikes, track bikes, and tour bikes (one of Fuji’s sponsored riders just won the Australian National Women’s Championship). You can browse catalogs on-line and purchase on the website of Performance Bike, the chief retailer of these brands (a 100+ stores in 20 states), Performancebike.com. The purchase will be delivered to the address of choice. See the link to the flyer above, though the expiration date on the offer is mistaken; the arrangement will continue indefinitely. Direct any questions you might have to anker@calvin.edu.

At any age, physical exercise of any kind provides significant health benefits of various kinds. For the aging in particular, including something so simple as a good walk, or simply a number of short walks, provides marked benefits in physical strength, agility, endurance, and resilience. And as researches are now discovering, there are also for multiple reasons definite benefits in mental acuity. And even slight exercise, especially out of doors, has marked impact on mood and general emotional well-being. In short, far from only benefiting physical well-being, new research shows the fruits are remarkably holistic.

A second component of this bicycling initiative will regularly provide through the CALL newsletter and website the following:

  1. Practical and reliable information on cycling in general, focusing on fitness benefits for the aging,
  2. Safe practices in riding, from attire to bike “fit.”
  3. Information on bicycling resources,
  4. And where to ride (and walk) comfortably and safely in the Grand Rapids area, locating initially from the Calvin University campus and from there radiating outward to the region.
