Calvin celebrated the achievements of 955 graduates during its 90th Commencement ceremony, held in May in Van Noord Arena.
Richard Mouw, president of Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif., delivered the Commencement address. From 1968 to 1985, Mouw served as professor of Christian philosophy at Calvin. In his address, “What It’s All About,” he encouraged graduates to pursue the goal of bringing glory to God by following Jesus.
“The world desperately needs people who are gifted with the ability to think carefully about the basic issues of life … but when all is said and done, it is all about Jesus,” he said. “So my charge to you this day is simply this: Be faithful to Jesus and do so with courage and unwavering commitment.”
Anne Engbers, Jacque Greenman and Marjorie Van Kooten, all Class of ’58, received the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Calvin Alumni Association. Upon graduating, the three moved to Alaska (before it was a state) and pursued nursing careers. During their time in Alaska they founded the Cooper Landing Senior Citizens Corp Inc., which provides affordable senior housing.
Edward T. Begay ex’58 of Gallup, N.M., also received the Distinguished Alumni Award. Begay served the Navajo Nation for 32 years in various roles, including representing the nation at U.N. conferences in Geneva, Switzerland.
