Your financial gifts support ongoing education and restoration activities that grants do not fund.
For example, Plaster Creek Stewards was jump-started in 2009 by a gift from an anonymous donor that funded our first Program Coordinator. Last winter 60+ donors gave over $25,000 to build a new greenhouse to keep up with our projects demands for native plants. This infrastructure also supports more education opportunities for future stewards since it is the backbone of all our restoration work and serves as a base camp for their summer activities (see Green Team and Student Research for more information). These students of all ages, just like the plants we grow, head out into the community to make our landscape more sustainable, a healthier place to live, work and worship—a watershed in the restoration process.
The Green Team program provides rich learning opportunities for high school youth to increase their understanding of watershed issues and develop concrete job skills in rain garden and bioswale installations. By working alongside college students this experience also helps to demystify the college experience for youth who may not be considering higher education as an option.
With the generous donations given last year, we were able to build a new greenhouse that serves as a hub for work and learning where the high school Green Team, college students, and volunteers join forces to help the watershed. The Green Team helps by collecting and planting seeds, transplanting seedlings, and installing green infrastructure that captures and purifies stormwater in the very neighborhoods where the students live.
2019 will mark the seventh year of this successful summer program. However, we only have partial funding for the next cohort of students.
So, we are turning to our friends to ask for your help. $20,000 is needed by February 1 to fully fund the Green Team in 2019. Gifts of any size would be greatly appreciated. Contributions of $10, $100, $1000 (or more!) will help us reach the goal. You can donate online by visiting our secure online donation site.
