Mental Health Ambassadors

Continuing Studies Program Online

What You'll Learn

Coming soon! The mental health crisis in our country is real – and in poor communities, finding help can be cost-prohibitive. This training, developed by two Calvin nursing professors through a grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, equips laypeople with support skills to help those who are struggling with their mental health and to know when to refer to a professional.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being, impacting how people think feel and behave. Though mental health is an important part of health at all stages of life, it is not always possible for people to access care due to high costs, stigma, and other factors. While we can't all be psychologists or social workers, learning some key aspects of mental health care will help us support each other effectively during difficult times. Through this course, you'll be able to:

  • Explain the role of a mental health ambassador
  • Differentiate between various mental health symptoms
  • Respond effectively to help promote positive mental health outcomes
  • Describe self-care strategies you can use to improve your own mental health
  • Determine when referral to a professional is required
