Intramural Volleyball (Sand)

Basic information

Rules and policies applying to intramural sand volleyball teams and players.

Games

Three games make up a match with the winning team taking 2 out of 3 games. Games are played to 21 points with rally scoring, win by 2. Rest period between games of a match shall be 2 minutes. There may also be a time limit imposed on games to ensure all teams get an opportunity to play.

Serving

Each member of the team shall serve in turn and have one attempt to get the ball over the net. The server shall stand with both feet behind the boundary line. The ball must be tossed and must be hit with only one hand. The server may let the ball drop to the ground once. Served balls that hit the net and continue over are considered fair and should still be played.

Rules

If a player touches the ball or the ball touches a player, he/she is considered to have played the ball.

It is legal to contact the ball with any part of the body as long as the ball rebounds immediately and does not "lay" against the body.

It is permissible to run out of bounds to play a ball before it contacts an object. Once a ball contacts any object other than a player, it is dead.

When a ball touches a boundary line, it is considered good.

Players are not permitted to scoop, hold, or lift the ball.

A ball touching the body more than once in succession is considered a double hit and is dead.

A ball is kept in play if it hits the net and goes over.

A ball hit into the net by a team may still be held in play provided that the net is not touched by any player and that the team has not hit the ball three times.

If two players contact the ball simultaneously, it counts as 2 hits and either may play the next ball.

The ball must be returned over the net in 3 hits or less.

Players may not touch the net.

A spiker must contact the ball on his/her own side of the net, but may in the course of the follow through, cross over but not touch the net.

Blockers may reach over the net but may not contact the ball until it has been directed toward the blocker's side.
