Intramural Volleyball (Coed)

Basic information

Rules and policies applying to intramural volleyball (coed) teams and players.

Players

A team consists of 6 players; minimum of 4 players

Games

Games are played to 25 points, using rally scoring, winning by two points. Team to win best 2 of 3 games wins the match.

Serving

Each member of the team shall serve in turn and gets one attempt to get the ball over the net.

The server shall stand with both feet behind service line.

Serves that hit the net and continue over the net are considered fair balls and are still in play.

Rules

If a player touches the ball or the ball touches a player, he/she is considered to have played the ball.

It is legal to contact the ball with any part of the body as long as the ball rebounds immediately and does not "lay" against the body. Foot can be played if on the ground.

It is permissible to run out of bounds to play a ball before it contacts an object. Once a ball contacts any object other than a player, it is dead.

When a ball touches a boundary line, it is considered good.

Players are not permitted to scoop, hold, or lift the ball.

A ball touching the body more than once in succession is considered a double hit and is dead, unless the first touch comes off of a “block”, then the player is permitted to hit the ball again.

A ball is kept in play if it hits the net and goes over.

A ball hit into the net by a team may still be held in play provided that the net is not touched by any player and that the team has not hit the ball three times.

If two players contact the ball simultaneously, it counts as 2 hits and either may play the next ball.

The ball must be returned over the net in 3 hits or less.

Players may not touch the net.

Substitutes will be included in the order of rotation. Rotate in at the serving position on the change of service. Previous server rotates out.

Blockers may reach over the net but may not contact the ball until it has been directed toward the blocker's side.

Balls hitting the ceiling and falling back on the players own side is still playable. If a ball hits the ceiling and goes over the net, it is dead.

Coed Modifications

A team consists of 6 players, 3 men and 3 women. However, teams are permitted to compete with as few as 4 players as long as the minimum number of women and/or men is 2 and the maximum number of men is 3. Combinations include

3 men - 3 women

2 men - 2 women

2 men - 3 women

3 men - 2 women

2 men - 4 women

Additional players rotate in in place of a player of the same gender.

Time the time of play must be kept under an hour in order to allow the schedule of events to proceed on time. If play is still going when time has been called, the team with more points is considered the winner
