Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs: Working at the State Department

  • Monday, October 21, 2019
  • 8:00 AM–9:00 AM
  • Political Science Department Conference Room

The October Career Breakfast will feature Dan Holtrop, Outreach Unit Chief in the State Department Office of International Religious Freedom (IRF).  He has worked on Foreign Service assignments in Taipei and in Guangzhou (China), and also in Washington, D.C. on the Taiwan desk and as Asia Unit Chief in the Political-Military Affairs Bureau’s Office of Regional Security & Arms Transfers.  Dan also recently worked a one-year detail running the IRF Caucus in Congress, and this August he started running strategy and media in the arms control bureau.

Prior to joining the State Department, Dan worked as a history professor and did Chinese military intelligence in the U.S. Army.  Dan holds a BA in History, German, and Political Science from Calvin (and was the student body president), and has his MA in U.S. Foreign Relations history from Indiana University-Bloomington.

Joining us for breakfast will be Dan's guest Erica Kasraie, who is the Director of Living Water Productions. Erica recently interviewed Yazidi survivors of ISIS genocide and sex slavery in Iraq.  She will be curating a charity art auction of survivor artwork in New York City to help these survivors support their families.

Since seating is limited, you must RSVP to reserve a place for this event. Email Ellen Hekman (elh4@calvin.edu) and include your name, the event you are reserving a place for, and your cell phone number (for text reminder purposes).
