The Calvin Center for Innovation in Business (CCIB) is offering its second-annual Young Women's Business Institute. The three-day program runs July 17-19, 2013, and is open to young women entering their junior or senior years of high school in fall of 2013.

The program, which launched in 2012, provides young women with an on-ramp into the business world. Bob Eames, the director of CCIB, says it was designed to help young women with an interest in studying business to see the possibilities and career opportunities that are available to them.

"The idea is to recruit young women who may not have any business role models, and help them create a vision for what it might look like to be in business," said Eames. "What blew me away last year was the high quality, high caliber of the participants and their level of engagement."

Eames expects no less from this year's group, which will include 20 juniors and seniors. The young women will network with fellow participants and local business leaders and work with Calvin's career development team on strengths training--to identify and develop personal strengths and see how those strengths could be of value in different areas of business.

The capstone of the experience is an all-day, hands-on project. The participants will partner with design researchers at GRID 70--a design hub that brings together creative talent from four major corporations: Meijer, Amway, Steelcase and Wolverine Worldwide. Together, they will apply the globally-used "human-centered design" process to innovatively solve a real-world problem.

"The business community understands the value of paying it forward, investing in middle school and high school students, and seeing opportunities in all areas," said Eames. "The business community starts with 'Yes.'"

"I have a tremendous passion for encouraging young women to dream big," said Mary Tuuk '86, president of Fifth Third Bank-West Michigan and one of the visionaries behind the program. "The Institute is a perfect opportunity for young women to begin that journey of realizing on their dreams and God-given gifts."

Applications for the program are due Friday, May 31. For more information on the application process, visit www.calvin.edu/innovation/institute/womensinstitute .

The program is funded completely by generous donations from corporate and private partners. Students only need to cover their personal expenses and the cost of transportation to and from Calvin College.
