River City Improv, the Calvin alumni improv team, will be on the Blue Bridge downtown at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, cheering for all comers in an ArtPrize event called "Congratulations."
"It's going to be a positive, improvised event to celebrate the good things in people's lives," said Rick Treur '93, who co-founded River City Improv after he graduated from Calvin College.
The cheer-ers will form two lines on the Blue Bridge facing each other with an aisle in between. Whoever wants to be cheered will run down between the lines of cheering people, holding up a sign explaining why they're running. People can participate in the event by either cheering or being cheered for.
"We had a woman who posted on our Facebook wall that she had lost 84 lbs., and that she was coming down because she had been looking for a way to celebrate it publicly," said Treur.
After Treur and company planned the event, they learned that there is going to be a wedding on the Blue Bridge at the same time that "Congratulations" is taking place. When he talked with the bride-to-be to work out details of both events happening on the bridge at the same time, she said that she was planning on running through the cheer line to be congratulated after her ceremony.
Treur is hoping this event will showcase the good things happening among the people of west Michigan:
"Lately, I feel like in some ways the world is going to explode: earthquakes, tsunamis, the economy, people losing their jobs. We need to take time to remember the positive things that are happening all around us."
